New mirrorless Alpha 5100 focuses in 0.07 seconds

Sony, well-known for their impressive line-up of digital cameras, unveiled their latest mirrorless interchangeable lens unit – the Alpha 5100. The body of the camera might seem small, but don’t be fooled by looks.

The little guy packs a punch with a 24.3 MP APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor. Being a follow-up from the previous Alpha 6000 model, it has the same Fast Hybrid AF system, which allows it to focus on an object in 0.07 seconds. By comparison, Samsung touted their Galaxy S5 smartphone has having the fastest focus for a mobile, which focuses on an object in 0.30 seconds.

Measuring in at 110 x 63 x 36 mm and weighing only 283g, Sony says that it places the Alpha 5100 among the smallest and lightest interchangeable lens cameras in market today – and it has an articulated 3-inch LCD screen.

“Sony continues to innovate in the mirrorless camera space, offering products that are not only smaller and lighter than competitive DSLRs, but that consistently outperform them,” said Neal Manowitz, director of the interchangeable lens camera business at Sony, in a press statement.

“The new α5100 is a primary example, offering world-class AF speed and performance in a palm-sized body at a great price.  It’s powerful enough to satisfy the most experienced DSLR shooters, yet not too intimidating for the casual weekend photographer.”

Other features if the Alpha 5100 include:

  • Max sensor resolution: 6000 x 4000
  • ISO: Auto, 100-25600
  • Digital zoom: 2X (Clear Image Zoom), 4X (digital zoom)
  • Number of focus points: 179
  • Minimum shutter speed: 30 sec
  • Maximum shutter speed: 1/4000 sec
  • Built-in flash: Yes
