Sony Xperia M2 Aqua brings waterproofing to the midrange

We’ve generally been big fans of the stuff going on at Sony’s Xperia smartphone division of late, especially given how much we enjoyed using the beautiful Xperia Z1 Compact and the almost comically powerful Xperia Z2 earlier this year.

One of the biggest selling points at the top end of the Sony smartphone spectrum has been the decision to waterproof and dustproof the phones to make them more durable, a move that saw some of the competition follow suit earlier this year.

But what about those looking to get a smartphone that doesn’t cost a small fortune or require a mortgage-like monthly contract to acquire?

Sony has just announced a waterproof version of its mid-range Xperia smartphone dubbed the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua which actually boasts a better ingress protection rating than any top of the range Xperia smartphone before it.

While the specifications list isn’t likely to blow you away, the 540×800 resolution 4.8 inch IPS display seems to be good enough from a cursory glance with the welcome inclusion of an LTE radio also noticeable. The Xperia M2 Aqua is powered by a quad core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor as well as having 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. Software wise the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua will run on the latest version of Google’s Android operating system, version 4.4.

The Xperia M2 Aqua will cost around R4 199 from Vodacom from mid-September and those who purchase the phone will be entitled to download three blockbuster from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment including The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Captain Phillips and Ghostbusters as well as the full first season of the TV series, The Blacklist.

It will be interesting to see what price the Xperia M2 Aqua comes in at – on Orange’s local online store as they have a sneaky habit of undercutting the networks rather often, especially given While Orange probably won’t be offering the Xperia M2 Aqua at its online store (we’ve been told it’s a Vodafone group exclusive) it is interesting to note the fact that for around R1 000 more than an M2 Aqua’s RRP you can bag an Xperia Z1 Compact which offers a much better spec sheet for your money.
