Microsoft unveils R270 Nokia phone

While Microsoft will be ending the production of the Nokia Asha phones as well as making the Nokia X Android phones run on Windows Phone, it has just proved that it’s still in the business of making lower-end phones with the announcement of the Nokia 130.

The Nokia 130 costs just €19 (R270) and is aimed at first time mobile phone owners (or anyone really) looking for a basic communication device.

It weighs a mere 68.6g and features a video player with up to 16 hours of playback time, a MP3 player with up to 46 hours of playback time, a FM radio, a micro SD slot, a 1.8 inch colour display and a built-in rear torch.

The downside however is that the Nokia 130 has no camera or internet connectivity, which means users will have to rely on Bluetooth, USB sharing and micro SDs to load videos, photos and music onto the phone.

The Nokia 130 comes in two versions: a single and dual SIM, each offering up to 36 and 26 days of standby time respectively, and up to 13 hours of talk time for both versions. The Nokia 130 comes in black, white and red and Nokia says it will be released this quarter.

Speaking to ReCode about the Nokia 130 being targeted at developing markets, Microsoft’s phone unit vice president Jo Harlow said “Microsoft doesn’t have any other project that can reach these consumers,” and that “more than a billion people don’t have a cell phone.”

Although the Nokia 130’s low price tag may be appealing to some, we’re not sure if it represents real value when compared to low-cost smartphones such as the MTN Steppa and the Vodafone Smart 4 Mini which offer the full smartphone experience for just a small increase in asking price.
