Interstellar strategists rejoice, Ancient Space is out on Sept 23

As if September and October aren’t stuffed enough with games, a new space strategy called Ancient Space has just pinged my radar with a release date that’s right around the corner.

Kotaku says it will be out on the 23rd of September for PC via Steam, and the developer diary/gameplay trailer that publisher Paradox Interactive has just put out shows that it’s going to be a lot more than just another dramatic space opera or disappointing quasi-3D space game.

It will instead offer full 3D real-time strategy that looks like it could occupy a niche between two excellent space RTSes, Homeworld and Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, with spaceship battles in properly three-dimensional space that the official website says encourages “highly tactical manoeuvring”. That’s not a bad thing at all.

Along with fleets of starships firing lasers and torpedoes at one another and a contemplative, exploratory sub-theme of discovery, the game will have a massive home ship with its own personality, voiced by Dwight Schultz of Star Trek/The A Team fame. The video also confirms that several B-list sci-fi actors (and one actress) will voice some of the game’s characters.

The only real thing that has me a tad disappointed is that Ancient Space is entirely single-player only, so I won’t have the chance to pit my 3D strategies against those of my mates.

Even so, there’s still a lot to like here, plus it’s only $19.99 on Steam and $17.99 if you pre-order it now on the Paradox website.
