No internet today? Here’s what Oscar did to SA data

Notice anything a little spikey about your internet connection today? You’ll probably be unsurprised to learn that there was a lot of data going back and forth around the country and over its borders. Yes, it’s the Oscar verdict (sorry).

It’ll take a while to find out exactly how big the spike was across all networks, but we have got a nice comparison of traffic at NAPAfrica, the continent’s largest internet exchange and the point at which many local networks interface with the outside world.

At its Midrand home just before lunch this morning, data flowing out of NAPAfrica very nearly hit a massive 20Gbps as Judge Masipo delivered the first half of her verdict. That’s about a third again the usual background rate, which these days peaks at 15-16Gbps.

At 19.5Gbps, traffic across NAPAfrica was up from usual daily peaks of about 16Gbps.

It should be noted that yesterday was also a busy day on the network – likely because of the iPhone launch the night before – although the peaks weren’t as pronounced or sustained.

NAPAfrica also supplied us with this weekly chart of its throughput. Which puts things in perspective.

Traffic from the last week over NAPAfrica. The peak during today's verdict was big, but not as big as that at the height of the trial.

Perhaps the most interesting thing, though, is that the size of today’s peak was nowhere near that at the height of the trial, when traffic across NAPAfrica rose almost three times its baseline.
