Cell C zero rates WhatsApp until at least 2015

Mobile networks have been traditionally rather shy when it comes to embracing services that cut off large parts of their revenue, so the news today that Cell C is making all of the data costs associated to the SMS killer known as WhatsApp is rather strange.

The deal comes automatically comes into effect for Cell C contract and prepaid users that are on the MegaBonus pricing plan, and will run from the 19th of October at least until the end of the festive season this year.

Cell C CEO Jose dos Santos said that the more customers join Cell C during the duration of the promotion, the longer it will run but fell short of guaranteeing it for longer than the end date saying “What I can guarantee is that at the very least, Cell C customers on the relevant packages will not pay a cent to use WhatsApp this festive season.”

In case you were wondering, it’s not just text messages that will be zero rated either with pictures, voice messages and even, potentially data heavy, videos also coming in at the price of free. Cell C also confirmed that data will not be charged for sending or receiving messages either.

“WhatsApp is pleased to partner with Cell C as it presents this unique offering to users in South Africa.” said co-founder of WhatsApp, Brian Acton.”With over 600 million active users around the world, we remain focused on helping people communicate and stay connected in a way that has become a part of everyday life.”

For those not currently using the MegaBonus pricing package on prepaid, you can get more information about it on Cell C’s website and if you choose to switch over to it, can do so by dialling *108# from your Cell C SIM card.
