Listen to African music on your phone for free with Mziiki

Love African music? Have a favourite artist that you don’t see on Simfy or Rdio? Mziiki can help.

It’s an African-developed streaming app that offers a large library of African and international artists whose music can be streamed to your phone for free. It works on Android, iOS and BlackBerry.

The only costs you’ll incur are related to the data you’ll consume while streaming, but even that can be addressed by hooking up to a WiFi network with uncapped ADSL access.

Mziiki has signed up over 800 African artists in exclusive deals, making it the only place to enjoy musicians like hip-hop star Nonini from Kenya, afrobeat and reggae musician Chameleone from Uganda and Bongo Flava star Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania.

The app isn’t just about listening, either: you can also dedicate songs to people over email or directly to their phones, and you can share what you’re listening to via Facebook, Twitter, email and SMS.

Web and tablet versions of the app will be available sometime in October of this year, but in the meantime the Mziiki app is available on iTunes, the Google Play Store and BlackBerry World.

Just be aware, though, that even though Mziiki says it works on BlackBerry, it won’t work on newer phones running BlackBerry 10.
