Cheapest smartphones will have LTE by next year

Cheap smartphones are quickly becoming the main driver of mobile phone sales the world over, but with the massive shift coming from most of the major network operators towards smarter, faster LTE networks, the budget smartphone will need to evolve with it.

Qualcomm is at the heart of this changeover as the company is one of the major suppliers of smartphone and tablet processors, as well as the aerials and modems that allow them to connect to the networks that supply the lifeblood that is data (especially in the form of super-fast LTE data).

Qualcomm’s latest processor is called the Snapdragon 210. It falls into the budget 200-series of processors that are made by the company but that hasn’t stopped them from adding in LTE capability into it. It’s an interesting addition to the processor family considering the fact that Qualcomm is pushing for its inclusion in sub $100 (R1 100) smartphones which could see them selling bucket loads of these little guys in 2015.

The specs on the Snapdragon 210 aren’t enough to net one a place in the next Galaxy S5 or HTC One, but considering the price point of the phones that it aims for there is more than enough included in the package to potentially make it a juggernaut at the low-end of the scale.

At the top end of the scale the Snapdragon 210 can be kitted out with up to four cores running at 1.1GHz each, as well as supporting both LPDDR2 and LPDDR3 RAM. It can power an 8 megapixel camera and a 720p display – they’ve even integrated Bluetooth 4.1, 802.11n WiFi and NFC capabilities in certain models. Basically smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 210 will be full featured, regardless of price.

Look out for Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 210 to start appearing in the entry-level smartphone market in the middle of 2015 and get ready for the LTE future that we were promised.
