Twitter launches a “Buy” button ushering in the age of Tweet-commerce

Imagine casually scrolling through your Twitter timeline in the afternoon when all of a sudden the most epic pair of takkies appears with some words advertising the fact that, for today only, those fantastic foot coverings could be yours for 30% less than they would normally cost you. You click a little button at the bottom of the tweet with three letters on it (BUY) and a few days later the sneakers arrive at your door.

It’s not too difficult to envision, and it’s not too far off into the future either with the news that Twitter has launched its “Buy” button to turn the social platform into a potentially giant purchasing platform.

“We built this test experience with your trust and security at the forefront. Your payment and shipping information is encrypted and safely stored after your first transaction, so you can easily buy on Twitter in the future without having to re-enter all of your information,” the company said in a blog post about the new feature.

“Of course, you can always remove this information from your account. Your credit card is processed securely and won’t be shared with the seller without your permission.”

The button is currently being rolled out to a select group of users in the US as Twitter begins to test out the service – it will be available in more countries around the world as the platform grows over time.

The first set of retailers to get access to the new feature includes a list of musicians and bands, including Demi Lovato, Eminem and Pharrell, which is a smart move in our opinion as it should help increase the trust that users have with the platform by offering them merchandise from the artists’ official accounts.

We can’t see any reason why the feature won’t make it to South Africa in the near future but the question is, would you trust Twitter to be your online shopping platform of choice?
