Western Cape plots maps of child road deaths to shock motorists into driving better

The government of the Western Cape has opened up a new front in its campaign to protect children on South Africa’s deadly roads: it’s begun to plot a map of all the places where children under 10 have been run over and killed this year.

The map, which can be found here, is part of the Safe Home, Safe Kids campaign, which aims to make both drivers and parents aware of the particular vulnerabilities of children on the roads. According to Western Cape stats, 191 children died on the roads in the area last year, of whom 127 were run over and 90 were under ten. Three quarters were from the Metro region’s poorest communities.

The map shows data from 2014, from the start of the year to the middle of September. According to the campaign 983 people in total have been killed in traffic accidents over that period of time in the area.

South Africa is one of the worst places in the world to venture on to the roads, where deaths per 100 000 inhabitants ranks the country as the eighth least safe place to be. According to WHO stats, you’re better off on the roads of Iraq than South Africa.

Last month, transport minister Dipuo Peters said that the national government plans to invest billions into the rail network over the next three years to try and encourage people to get off the roads.
