Learn to make games at the Friends of Design Academy of Digital Arts

The more gaming gains traction in South Africa, the more interest there is in making them. But how to go about it isn’t exactly common knowledge, and even though there are several places that offer courses in game creation most South Africans aren’t aware of them.

That’s the word from Lars Espeter, a course director at the Friends of Design Academy of Digital Arts, who contacted us by email.

He wrote “Based on our experiences at the rAge expo and from our corporate clients we know that there is a huge interest in game and game technology developers … but a lot of students do not know that education in this field is actually possible.”

He went on to tell us about a Game Graphics and Multimedia Education (G.a.M.E.) course that the Academy is running. It’s apparently the only one of its kind in South Africa that’s accredited by the Council on Higher Education, and it will equip graduates with a working knowledge of several critical game-creation skills.

He directed us to the course’s page on the Academy’s website, which said that at the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Work with a team of specialists creating games or other interactive products
  • Understand Game Technology and its many applications
  • Create 3D models for in-game or interactive use
  • Script gameplay elements for games
  • Define and document a game concept from idea to the finished document
  • Analyze games for flaws in game features and level design
  • Understand the game industry better than most people
  • Plan, research, work and improve your skills in your field of specialization and others
  • Create game concepts for different purposes and target groups (Advertising, Education, Entertainment, etc.)
  • Know what makes games work and why

Students will use and gain familiarity with these software packages:

  • Unity3D
  • Blender
  • JavaScript (Game Engine related)

You’ll need to be in Cape Town or Johannesburg to attend the course as those are the only two cities where the Academy has campuses, and there is no word on how much the course costs. But if this sounds like something you’d like to get involved in, or you know anyone who wants to learn how to make games, head over to the course’s official web page and check it out.
