Update 2.0 for the PS4 is here

After hyping the next PlayStation 4 update six ways from Sunday (but neglecting to tell us when it was actually coming), Sony has finally released Update 2.0 for all PS4 owners.

We’ve been told that it’s currently live, and should your PS4 be in standby mode with background downloads enabled, the update could be coming down right now as you read this.

While I’ve written about it before on two previous occasions, I haven’t covered the full breadth of the update. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that Update 2.0 will not only add themes, music playback via USB and allow gamers to share their clips directly to YouTube, it will also let you share and play games with your friends, even if they don’t own them, via a new feature Sony is calling Share Play.

Here’s a full overview of everything the update contains:

• Share Play: PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game – even when they don’t own a copy of it
• YouTube: A dedicated app for YouTube is coming with v2.0, along with the ability to upload gameplay highlights directly from PS4 to YouTube by clicking the ‘Share’ button on DUALSHOCK 4. Be sure to check the PlayStation Store to download the YouTube app
• Themes and colours: Personalise your home screen background with select themes and colours
• Live broadcasting enhancements: Search filters, archived broadcast support and more have been added to Live from PlayStation
• Content Area and Library: Find and access your content quicker with a redesigned Content Area and improved filter and sort functions for the PS4 Library
• USB Music Player: Insert USB memory with music in your PS4 and start playing your favourite tunes in the background
• Players you may know: Get suggestions for gamers you may know in the ‘What’s New’ section

If that’s too much text for you, here’s a quick 1:29 video that says everything you need to know, just with moving pictures and sound. Hooray for Sony’s understanding of ADD!

With Microsoft continually working to improve the Xbox One and Sony likewise pulling out all the stops to do the same for the PlayStation 4, and both companies actively soliciting and listening to player feedback, both consoles are so much better now than when they launched a year back and will continue to improve in the coming years.

Are there any features you guys are looking for that neither company has addressed yet? As always, let us know on the forum.
