Court orders SABC to suspend controversial COO

The Western Cape High Court has ordered SABC to suspend its chief operating officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng, and undertake disciplinary proceedings against him. The public broadcaster has two weeks to comply with the judgement which was handed down by Judge Aston Schippers this morning.

Motsoeneng has been censured by the Office of the Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, who recommended disciplinary action earlier in the year following an investigation into reports that he lied on his CV. Prior to that, Madonsela had already recommended action be taken on account of irregular pay rises and hiring practices.

No action was taken as a result of Madonsela’s findings, and instead Motsoeneng was appointed to the permanent position of COO, a post he had merely been acting in previously.

The case against SABC was brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA) following that appointment. The EFF had threatened to also bring a case.

Motsoeneng also made headlines this year when he bizarrely recommended that journalists in South Africa should be forced to carry a licence to practice.
