Dark Souls for PC to lose Games for Windows Live next month

Dark Souls for PC has always had Microsoft’s much-hated Games for Windows Live overlay, but that’s about to change. The publlisher, Bandai Namco, announced plans back in May they’d look into ways of supporting the game on PC, and apparently their solution is to migrate the game over to Steamworks, Valve’s multiplayer/achievement system.

They’ve just announced as much on their official tumblr.

Owners of the game on Steam don’t have to do anything, the update will roll out to them when the time comes. The post mentioned that there will be a period where players will be able to transfer their save data (that is, their characters and progress info) over to their Steam accounts, but the post didn’t talk dates, it just said “a period in November 2014”, and that “The specific migration start and end dates will be available soon”.

That is important as save data for Games for Windows Live games is encrypted, and should players miss the window they’ll need to start again.

Personally, I’m not particularly happy about this as I’m one of the very few people on the internet (apparently) who has had little to no problems with the Games for Windows Live system. I’ve loved being able to unlock achievements that count towards my Xbox gamerscore playing PC games that look so much better than they do on the 360, and even the One thanks to my powerful graphics hardware.

I think the problem was Microsoft didn’t give the system the attention it deserved, and simply left it to stagnate over the years. I still hope for a way to unlock Gamerscore on my PC in future games, but at this point I doubt it’ll ever happen – I reckon the Xbox One is too important for Microsoft to want to undermine its appeal by porting its unique capabilities over to PC.

I’d give a “Praise the sun!” here, but I’m not feeling it. Hooray for those who hate GFWL, and love Steam’s no-sound, no-metascore achievement pops.
