Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is out for Xbox 360

A rumour circulated last week about developer Rockstar releasing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the Xbox 360 to celebrate the game’s ten-year anniversary.

Well, it turned out to be 100% true, and the game is available right now on the Xbox Live marketplace.

The new San Andreas features a 720p resolution bump and Achievement support that includes 11 secret wins. No word on whether it has also had its textures upgraded, but I sure hope they were. The PS2 may have been a fantastic gaming machine back in the day but ten years is a long time for PS2-era textures to remain acceptable. I will know more once the game download completes – I couldn’t resist pulling the trigger on this one.

San Andreas has you stepping into the shoes of Carl “CJ” Johnson as he returns to San Andreas on the news of his mother’s murder. He’s immediately framed for murder by two corrupt cops, which involves him back in the life of crime, gangsterism and drugs that drove him from San Andreas in the first place. It’s yet another huge open-world game that lets players enjoy doing whatever they like with a truckload of extra-curricular activities, as well as a sterling, brilliantly-told tale of crime, violence and redemption.

My personal favourite thing to do in the original game was making CJ all fat with junk food, and then slimming him down again by making him go to the gym. That and making him ride around town being all gangster… while riding a bicycle. Oh, the lulz.

At the time of writing the game is on special on the UK Xbox Live store for 2.99 GBP and the US store for $3.74, but the special ends today. Don’t fret, though, should you miss out it’ll simply go to its full price of 9.99 GBP and $14.99 (R165 – R200), which is still a very cheap price for a stupendously good game.

Update: The South African Xbox Live Marketplace has the game for a very reasonable R37.25, which is less than you’ll pay on either the US or UK store. Win!
