Microsoft’s Office 365 just killed Dropbox and Google Drive

Yesterday Microsoft announced that it would offer unlimited storage for any of its customers subscribed to the Office 365 productivity suite, putting massive pressure on competitors like Dropbox and Google Drive to lower their prices or face losing customers to Microsoft in the long run.

The move comes barely four months after Microsoft announced that it would be increasing the OneDrive storage that Office 365 would come with to 1TB, which already undercuts the storage plans of both Dropbox and Google Drive who offer 1TB for $9.99 a month (R109) – the entry level Office 365 Personal package costs just R74.99 a month. In fact for R94.99 a month Office 365 Home gives five different users unlimited storage as well as the ability to install Microsoft’s Office productivity suite on their PC or Mac, and grants full access to the mobile apps for both iPad and Android tablets as well.

What that essentially means is that if you were paying for extra storage space on a competing cloud storage platform it’s now cheaper to move to Microsoft’s Office 365 and you get to use Office for the price as well, you know, if you want to.

The rollout has already started for Office 365 Home, Personal and University subscribers and will come to OneDrive for Business over the coming months as part of Microsoft’s Office 365 upgrade roadmap. To jump to the head of the queue you can head over to the Microsoft’s OneDrive preview site where you can opt in to be part of the initial phase of upgrade… at the cost of being part of the OneDrive mailing list which you can (thankfully) unsubscribe from at a later stage.
