Raspberry Pi gets a touchscreen

Everyone’s favourite little computer, the Raspberry Pi, has a new module which has the potential to start a fresh wave of innovation.

That’s because the latest module is a 7 inch, VGA resolution (640×480) touchscreen which, along with being able to be mounted as a touch screen input for your DIY projects, could also spark the start of home made tablets. And while they are admittedly rather chunky, they might just be one of the coolest science projects for kids to get into the maker space.

“The whole time we’ve been doing Raspberry Pi we’ve been saying yeah the display accessory is coming, yeah the display accessory is coming — and the display accessory is finally coming,” said Eben Upton the founder of the Raspberry Pi project at the Tech Crunch Disrupt event. “This is our first display panel that we’re going to be hopefully getting out of the door before the end of the year or early next.”

More than 4 million Pi Model Bs have already been sold so far which bests the 10 000 that Upton originally expected and have recently updated the popular Model B board received a hardware update, now called the Model B+, with additional ports and lower power consumption while still retaining its absurdly low $35 price tag. Conversely the cheaper ($25) Model A has sold just 100 000 units since it launched which is why Upton stated that the foundation would be announcing a new Model A+ board in the coming weeks.
