Today is the day South African gamers will get to step into the shoes of Talion, the lead character of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor as he runs around Mordor stabbing orcs to death. But before your preorder copies arrive or you run off to the shops to grab it, many of you are probably wondering what the differences are between the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC versions’ graphics – and rightly so.

Personally, I’m most impressed by the PlayStation 4’s visuals as to me, the contrast. clarity and colours there look the best. You must note, though, that the PC version being compared here is not running the high-resolution texture pack that gives the PC a bit of an advantage over the console versions. This way it’s more of an apples-to-apples comparison.
Should you be a PC gamer (and good on you if you are), you can grab the high-res textures here. It’s a 3.7GB download, and while it’ll work okay on most video cards, you’ll need a card with 3GB or 4GB of video memory to avoid frame-rate drops due to the extra processing load caused by the bigger textures.
My PS4 review copy arrived yesterday so I’m going to be reviewing it soon, and my initial impressions are very good. It seems to mix the best bits of two very good games (Assassin’s Creed, Batman) into a final blend that’s very pleasing to behold and with enough of its own personality to make it more than derivative, so regardless of the platform you get it for, I’m pretty sure you’ll be winning.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is out today for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (R499 PC, R699 console), with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions only arriving on the 21st of November.
