U2’s Bono (somewhat) apologises for free iTunes album

Remember that free U2 album that mysteriously appeared in your iTunes library when Apple announced the iPhone 6? A lot of people didn’t like the fact that the Irish boyband rockers’ latest music infiltrated their most precious playlists without their consent – so much so that frontman Bono has somewhat apologised for it.

The group posted a video to its Facebook account where it answered some questions by fans, and user Harriet Madeline Jobson asked ‘Can you please never release an album on iTunes that automatically downloads to people’s playlists ever again? It’s very rude’.

Bono gave a somewhat sheepish reply by saying “Oops. Um. I’m sorry about that. I had this beautiful idea and we got carried away with ourselves. Artists are prone to that kind of thing.”

Explaining a bit further, he mentioned the ingredients that went into the band’s poor decision-making regarding the album’s release.

“Drop of megalomania, touch of generosity, dash of self-promotion, and deep fear that these songs that we poured our life into over the last few years might not be heard. There’s a lot of noise out there. I guess we got a little noisy ourselves to get through it,” he said.

The album releasing on iTunes and automatically being added to users’ playlists reportedly netted the group around $100 million. But the pushback from the online community was so fierce, that Apple eventually released a self-help guide on how to remove the album from your library.
