Get Good Old Games for cheap in GOG.com’s latest sale

One of my most favourite websites ever, GOG.com, is having its annual Fall sale. It should be an Autumn sale, but I they’re probably trying to appeal to their American customer base.

That means for the next two weeks or so, almost everything on the site is, or will be, up for sale. That’s over 700 Good Old Games that you can pick up for up to 80% off, and since GOG’s prices are so low to start with you can really snap up some good deals.

The front page shows games being promoted for a limited time, and even tells you that Mount & Blade is free for another day or so. At the time of writing the countdown is 28 hours, which means the offer ends at 4pm on the 14th of November, so head over there now, sign up for an account and immerse yourself in some of the best horseback combat yet seen in a game.

Collect and earn

GOG likes to do fun things with every sale, and this one tasks gamers with collecting “stamps”, which are made available every few hours and must be clicked on to be collected. Once you have 7 stamps, you’ll get The Witcher 2 and a gaming documentary called The Gamers: Director’s Cut for free.

That’s a pretty sweet deal if you’ve never played The Witcher 2, as it was one of 2011’s best RPGs thanks to its memorable protagonist (Geralt, the badass enigmatic Witcher), its gorgeous visuals and lively world. I can hardly believe that was three years ago already; it’s so far back the third game is almost upon us – it releases next year February.

Anyway, all that aside there are plenty of classic games, and even some newer ones to be nabbed for good prices in the sale. Keep checking back to see which ones get special discounts and are featured on the main page, but don’t expect the newest titles, like the new LucasArts games that were added a few weeks back, to drop in price. It’s still too soon.

Start here

Here are a few recommendations to get you started if the sheer volume of options is a bit overwhelming:

System Shock 2 for $4.99

One of the best, if not the very best first-person shooter/role-playing hybrids of the nineties that became a cult classic for very good reason. Highly atmospheric with a memorable AI antagonist that was the GlaDOS of her time.

SS2
Time to play whack-a-hybrid.

Quest for Glory 1-5 for $4.99

My all-time favourite Sierra quest game series. It married the company’s parser interface with role-playing statistics, introduced multiple solutions to puzzles and three character classes that played significantly differently to one another. I still replay them from time to time.

QfG1-5
Sure it’s cheese, but it’s good cheese.

Crusader: No Remorse for $2.99

The very best and most underrated action game of the 90s that let you destroy almost everything in a time when such things weren’t commonplace. It features Full Motion Video, a memorable story and a pissed-off Silencer (future soldier with cool armour) with a serious axe to grind.

Crusader
Gratuitous explosions are the hallmarks of the Crusader series.

Phantasmagoria for $4.99

This revolutionary Sierra quest game is as dark and bloody as it is short – and it’s really short. Roberta Williams, the lady behind the ultra family-friendly King’s Quest series, shows her dark side in this truly creepy adventure game that blends motion-captured actors with digital backgrounds, and some surprisingly realistic gore effects. Highly recommended, if a bit short.

Phantasmagoria
Hidden altars in old houses are never good.

Planescape: Torment for $3.99

Play as The Nameless One, a tormented soul who keeps resurrecting but without memories of who he is. To remind himself, he carves messages on his body, and it’s up to you to gather a party – including a very cool talking skull – and find out what’s going on. Gorgeous graphics, strategic combat, clever writing and a complex, mysterious world are yours to explore.

PST
Burning people. Resurrections. This is one weird world, all right.
