World of Warcraft subscriber numbers surge to 10m as Warlords of Draenor launches

Warlords of Draenor is the latest expansion pack for the biggest massively multiplayer online game in the world, and Gamesindustry.biz has reported that shortly after its launch last  week, it has boosted World of Warcraft’s subscriber numbers to over 10 million. That’s still down from its peak numbers of over 12 million, but a lot better than the 7 million reported earlier this year.

The launch wasn’t without its problems, though – many players had to endure long queue times to log into the game, and the new Garrison feature left many players unable to progress through the storyline (via Eurogamer).

These problems have been addressed, as announced yesterday by WoW executive producer J. Allen Black via the game’s forums, and in compensation he said players who had active accounts as of the 14th of November will be given five free days of game time.

Internet buzz about the new expansion is largely positive, citing the well-written time-travel story and tons of new areas and things to see and do as the reasons.

The new expansion brings updated graphics to Blizzard’s long-running MMO, with more detailed player models, higher-resolution textures and other touches that make the 2004 game appear a bit more modern.

If you want to play, you’ll need an existing WoW subscription and R499 for the expansion. Game time currently costs R299 for 60 days. If you have yet to be bitten by the World of Warcraft bug, Blizzard offers everyone a free “Starter Edition” that can be played until your character is level 20.
