SA’s GoMetro transport app wins an international Meffy award

Breaking out on to the international mobile app scene is incredibly hard at the best of times. Competition is fierce and – let’s face it – a decent South African app is about solving South African problems. Why should anyone in San Francisco care? You might think that something as parochial as a transport app for navigating South Africa’s poorly documented public transport would really struggle to catch the eye of an overseas audience. But you’d be wrong.

The homegrown guide to trains and buses that is GoMetro just picked up a Meffy Award, the prestigious gongs doled out annually by mobile industry organisation MEF.Specifically the Innovation in a Growth Market award for its GoMetro mobile website.

“Every year the Meffys capture the dynamism of the mobile ecosystem. The award winners providing a unique window on how the industry is constantly evolving to provide an enhanced consumer experience and drive monetisation,” said Rimma Perelmuter, CEO at MEF in a media statement.

This isn’t the first time that it has won an award recognising its efforts to simplify things for rail commuters. In October the company won the African leg of the Get in the Ring startup competition. Thanks to winning that round, creator Justin Coetzee and his team will be competing in the finals in The Netherlands this weekend.
