Glasstastic: Nikon makes 90 millionth lens

Photographers will tell you that their profession is a huge deal – and it probably is – but nobody would have guessed the milestone struck by Nikon recently.

The camera company, which has been around for a number of decades, produced 90 million Nikkor lenses for Nikon interchangeable lens cameras by the end of October 2014.

Not to be outdone, the company announced that it has also produced 50 million Nikkor lenses equipped with the Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology. Adding up the numbers, Nikon has produced five million lenses since January this year.

“To date, a total of 72 zoom lenses, fixed focal length (prime) lenses, and Micro lenses covering a broad range of focal lengths from ultra-wide-angle to super telephoto, equipped with the SWM have been released for FX- and DX-format digital SLR cameras. The SWM-adopted series also includes one fast, medium-telephoto, fixed focal length (prime) lens for Nikon’s range of Advanced Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses,” Nikon said in a statement.

In September the camera giant released its D750, a model which was much-rumoured before the start of the annual photography conference Photokina, but never confirmed.

“The Nikon D750 is the camera many have been waiting for; never before has this level of functionality and vast feature set been offered in a full frame D-SLR, at such an attractive price,” said Masahiro Horie, director of marketing and planning, Nikon.

Together with the launch of the D750, it added the ultra-wide-angle AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED to its repertoire. “[It] utilizes the latest optical design technologies to achieve superior resolution. The lens also adopted Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat lens coating which controls generation of flare and ghost, while its ED lens elements achieves superior rendering capability with little chromatic aberration,” it explained.
