Cell C going to court over angry advertising banner

Cell C is heading to court today to have an advertising banner removed from the WorldWear Mall after it was placed last week Friday by a disgruntled customer. The banner which reads “The most useless service provider in SA — Cell C Sandton City” also prominently displayed the logo and branding of Cell C until they were blacked out with tape on Saturday.

“Letters of demand to remove the banner were issued to both the customer and the centre management at WorldWear Mall on Thursday evening,” said Cell C spokeswoman Karin Fourie. “Our demands were ignored by both the customer and the centre management and Cell C had to launch an urgent application to have the banner removed.”

What is initially not apparent when driving past the billboard or even seeing it in photos is that what appears to be a small white line at the beginning of each sentence is actually additional fine print wording that changes the statement on the banner to be “Cell C as perceived by the owner of this billboard to be The most useless service provider in SA as experienced via Cell C Sandton City

Both the nature and the results of the urgent appeal should be known later on today but we have a feeling that this battle may well go on for quite some time as Cell C gears up for a fight.
