Microsoft unveils low-cost Nextbook tablets for South Africa

At it’s local headquarters in Bryanston Microsoft South Africa unveiled its latest foray into the low-cost tablet space with the range of Nextbook tablets which are available from today in Makro stores around the country. The tablets are some of the first Windows Reference Design units to be made available in South Africa.

The Nextbook tablets come in two sizes – an 8 inch for those that want something similar to an e-reader in size for content consumption; and a 10.1 inch tablet (with a detachable keyboard) for those that want a full size tablet/notebook hybrid.

“We are pleased to be partnering with Makro to put affordable, yet top quality devices in the hands of local consumers,” says Melanie Botha, consumer channels group executive at Microsoft South Africa.

Microsoft is selling the Nextbook at a rather attractive price point as well with the 8 inch retailing for R1 499, while the 10.1 inch will be on the shelves for R2 999. Both models of the Nextbook are WiFi equipped but there are no 3G models available at launch or plans to bring them in any time soon either.

“The affordable price points of the Nextbook devices make tablets much more accessible to a larger section of South African consumers,” says Kevin Maier, merchandise manager from Makro South Africa.

“The 8 inch model will appeal to customers who want to hold their device in one hand whilst consuming media on-the-go, whilst the 10.1 inch tablet will find a home with road warriors that want to stay productive wherever they find themselves at a limited budget, without being limited in functionality,” Maier added.

Both versions of the tablet run on Windows 8.1 and come with a one year Office 365 subscription which includes unlimited OneDrive storage and 60 free Skype World Call minutes per month for the duration of the subscription.

The Nextbook 10.1’s internals are made up of an Intel ATOM quad core processor, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory that can be expanded to 64GB with a microSD card. For the 8.1 inch model, it runs on the same processor and RAM with 16GB of internal memory that can be expanded by up to 64GB with the microSD card slot.
