Prepare for loadshedding over the weekend

As we roll into another weekend, power utility Eskom has warned South Africa that there is a possibility of loadshedding this weekend.

“The system is expected to remain tight over the evening peaks for the next few days. While the demand for electricity is expected to be met today and tomorrow, there is a very high risk of load shedding over the weekend,” it said in a statement yesterday.

Given Eskom’s previous statements and its ability to loadshed without prior warning, we are going to go out on a limb here and say that you should definitely expect power losses and play accordingly. (Also, we have put together a real handy interactive map showing the loadshedding schedule for Johannesburg, Tshwane and Cape Town.)

Eskom detailed that it has to make provisions for the week ahead, and thus will be storing water at some of the hydroelectricity plants – which can lead to loadshedding.

“The weekend will also be utilised to build up water reserves for the pumped storage schemes which use water to generate electricity. We need to conserve diesel supplies to support the week ahead. The capacity available to meet demand for electricity will be reduced as a result thereby increasing the need for rotational load shedding.”

“Eskom has targeted the weekend to conduct load shedding, should the need arise, on purpose so as to limit the impact on the economy.”
