TEDx hitting SA’s most famous township this month

TEDx talks have already been hosted in Johannesburg and Cape Town this year, with TEDxSoweto coming up next in two weeks’ time.

Making its way back to the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani, the theme for TEDxSoweto 2014 is Silver Linings and will focus on the role of South Africa’s digital revolution and how it is empowering and will continue to empower our youth now and well into the future.

“Our population is getting younger and more unpredictable; our political environment is in a state of entropy; more and more, our economic fortunes are determined by forces beyond our control,” reads the TEDxSoweto website. ” Big data will make our democracy less opaque. New technologies will shift the means of production into the hands of ordinary people. Change begets new ideas. The future, here we come.”

The speaker line-up includes:

Sisonke Msimang – writer and activist
Muzi Kuzwayo – author and marketer
Amo Ngoepe – young traveler
Mothusi Lukhele – entrepreneur, farmer
Victor Kgomoeswana – Africa business specialist
Pierre du Plessis – trend analyst
Mandy Pakkiri – girl education activist
Litha Soyizwapi – app developer
Thorsten Deckler – architect
Gustav Praekelt – technologist and founder of The Praekelt Foundation

Standard tickets are going for R500; NGOs and students only pay R250 and you get a 10% discount per ticket for every five tickets you buy. That’s a pretty good incentive to get a few, so snap them up from Eventbrite while you can.
