Ellen Tshabalala reveals why she quit the SABC

Former SABC chair Ellen Tshabalala has said the debacle over her fake UNISA qualifications and calls for her to be fired put too much pressure on her personal life and business interests, which forced her to hand in her formal resignation with immediate effect to the office of the Presidency.

Yesterday, the office of the Presidency announced that it had accepted her resignation and wished her well. Professor Obert Mbulaheni Maguvhe is said to be the likely candidate to take over Tshabalala position.

“There was just too much pressure. There was pressure from my family and I am also running a business,” Tshabalala said.

Tshabalala also pointed to the South African Communist Party, saying they had the most incentive to have her removed.

“It could be the SACP, but definitely not the ANC. I am an ANC member and none or any of my leaders have ever called me to say you are going astray or anything,” Tshabalala said.

Tshabalala did however add that she will not give up the fight over the legitimacy of her qualifications in court.

“The issue of merit of whether I have a degree or not is a matter I’m prepared to fight even outside SABC because it is not a matter where I am content with the developments in Parliament. But I also feel the treatment by [the] portfolio committee was totally unfair, hence I took the matter to court and I had an appeal,” she said.
