Google wants to know if you’re still using Inbox

When Google launched its Inbox application, the world went crazy for access to the invite-only mail service. A number of months have passed and even here at htxt.africa we have tried Inbox, but found ourselves moving back to regular Gmail.

Google did say in the days leading up to launch that they hoped Inbox would revolutionise email, and according to a recent Reddit AMA session, Google engineers said that they would like to see all Gmail users on Inbox in the future.

“In the short term, no. In the very long term, we hope so. Inbox is something new — that’s why we’re launching it as a separate product. We care deeply about Gmail and Gmail users, but in the long run as we add more features to Inbox and respond to user feedback we hope that everyone will want to use Inbox instead of Gmail. Ultimately, our users will decide,” said lead designer Jason Cornwell.

The engineers were also asked if one product could be efficient for both standard email users and heavy power users and the answer led to some people wondering why Google didn’t just insert Inbox features in regular Gmail.

“They are not aimed at fundamentally different audiences. Both Gmail and Inbox are designed to scale from low volume to high volume users… The way people use email has changed a huge amount since we launched Gmail. With Inbox, we took a step back and did a lot of research into how most people are using email today. What we found was that email works as a to-do list for many people, that phone usage is starting to eclipse desktop usage, and that many people have negative feelings towards email because it feels like so much work. We built Inbox as a separate product because we didn’t feel like we could solve those problems by just adding more features on to Gmail. We needed to start from scratch to build a tool that really helps you stay on top of your life.”

We are not so sure about having to use Inbox exclusively in the future. Inbox looked great, but at the end of the day Gmail has just the right amount of bells and whistles.
