In South Africa, women and men are pretty much equal in terms of the number of users on Facebook, but according to the latest data from London-based researchers Information is Beautiful, women rule the social networking world around the globe, making up 50% or more of the user base on 19 out of 33 popular services.

The chart below, created by Silk’s data journalists, shows that Tumblr and Snapchat have the most women, with 72% and 70% of female users respectively, while other popular services like  Pintrest, MySpace, Foursquare, Vine, Flickr, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook following closely behind ranging between 66% and 52% of female users.

Information is Beautiful says male dominated social networks has become more equalised since 2012:

  • Google+ now has 57% male users versus 64% in 2012.
  • Reddit now has 60% men versus 74% in 2012.
  • YouTube now has 48% male users versus 54% in 2012

The only social networks with 50% of male and female users are StumbleUpon, Last.fm and meet.me. Google+ overtook YouTube over the last two years and is now the social network with the most percentage of male users at 63%.

The chart below shows the exactly how many active female and male users there are all 33 services:
