Where is Santa now? Christmas countdown begins with traditional online trackers

As Christmas fast approaches, most children (and some adults) are eagerly awaiting their annually delivery of presents from Santa Claus. I remember when I was young I never really knew when Santa will be making his appearance, but luckily Google is once again helping kids out to count down the days.

The Google Santa Tracker is an online advent calendar which unlocks a new activity every day until the 24th, after which kids can actually see how the white-bearded man makes his way across the globe. But being Google, Santa makes use of Google Maps to get around, and visitors to the website will be able to see his sled’s dashboard.

“Santa’s dashboard – featuring the latest and greatest in Google Maps technology and sleigh engineering – will allow you to follow his progress around the world, and also learn a little about some of his stops along the way,” Google explained.

According to The Verge, as more games and options are opened in Santa’s village there will even be a short lesson in how to create your own interactive using Javascript.

This is the second year what Google has developed a dedicated website to track Santa on the 24th as well as feature activities leading up to the celebrations, but it is definitely not the only one.

NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, has also hosted its own Santa tracker for many years now.  Instead of tracking missiles and dangers to American soil, it will give visitors another tracking method to see where Santa is in the world.

The website features one new game a day, a video gallery of NORAD’s Christmas plans, a playlist of Christmas-themed music for the one young to listen to, and a library with a wealth of information on Santa and the tradition of Christmas.
