[CES 2015] ASUS’ Zenfone 2 is the first smartphone to have 4GB of RAM

One of the best things about CES is getting the chance to see an ASUS keynote address from Jonney Shih, the company’s long time chairman who is one of the most excited individuals in the world of tech when it comes to showing off new products. This year Shih was on hand once again to take the wraps off a new smartphone from ASUS called the Zenfone 2 and, with his usual level of excitement, he announced that it was the first in the world to have 4GB of RAM.

As with many of ASUS’ products, the guts include a processor from Intel, this time in the shape of a 2.3GHz quad core processor which, of course, offers 64 bit computing with the Android 5.0 operating system.

The Zenfone 2 offers the exact same size and resolution display as Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus coming in at 5.5 inches in size and at a full HD 1 080×1 920 resolution. Camera wise you’re looking at a 13 megapixel rear camera with a host of software enhancements that ASUS claims will make pictures better than ever before.

The Zenfone 2 will start at just $199 when it goes on sale in the US in March which is around 1/3 of the price of the high end smartphones from the likes of Samsung and Apple.

We’ll keep our ear to the ground to find out whether it’s coming to South Africa in the coming months.
