[CES 2015] Samsung’s new SUHD TVs promise to beat OLED in quality

Not one to be left behind by its South Korean rivals, Samsung has just taken the wraps off of its latest and greatest UHD TVs and while its hometown rival LG is going all in on the OLED bandwagon, Samsung’s new top-of-the-range TVs will use nanocrystal semiconductors along with a new remastering engine that will be branded SUHD TVs.

Ranging in size from 48 to 88 inches, the new JS9500, JS9000 and JS8500 product lines will run Samsung’s homegrown Tizen operating system which the company is increasingly using in everything (although its smartphones which remain firmly rooted in the Android ecosystem).

According to executive vice president for Samsung Electronics America, Joe Stinziano, the new technology in the SUHD TVs solve issues like reliability, life span and cost and the panels themselves are “brighter than any other display technology with rich colours (that are) better than OLED”.

Stinziano also said that the SUHD TVs “deliver the highest colour purity and light efficiency available today”.

We were impressed with Samsung’s 55F9000 UHD TV when we reviewed it last year and will be chomping at the bit to get a hold of the latest offering from them to test out the company’s claims.

Neither US nor global pricing and availability were mentioned by anyone from Samsung during the presentation so we’ll just have to wait and see what the new SUHD TVs cost when they land in SA later in the year.
