[VIDEO] Loadshedding? What loadshedding? How to go off-grid in South Africa

Just over a year ago I visited the home of the very lovely and very clever Inus Dreckmeyr. The boss of Netshield, a Pretoria-based firm which specialises in innovative IT solutions for business, has a massive 4.8kW solar array on the roof of his house and 32 batteries in a shed which allow him to live completely off-grid.

With loadshedding back on the cards, a lot of people have become very interested in Dreckmeyr’s story (he was featured on a recent episode of Carte Blanche) so we wanted to catch up again and see how he’s faring. To do so, we sent a team from South Africa’s best tech-related TV show, EDGE: Science & Technology, for a visit. Below is the feature that was shot with host Danine Naidoo for last week’s show.

Want to see more of EDGE? The latest episode is showing tonight at 7pm on [ED]. You can find it on DStv by tuning to channel 190. This week’s show takes a look at tablets in schools, etolls and Joburg’s most interesting photography project.
