[MAP MONDAY] SA’s internet speed compared to the rest of the world

In 2015, South Africa, perceived to be one of the most advanced African countries, still has some of the slowest internet speed in the world.

The map below, created and posted on Reddit by a user going by the name DMan9797, shows the average download speeds in most countries in 2014.

South Africa ranks among the countries with the slowest internet speeds averaging between 2.5 – 5.0 Mbps, while Japan and a few European countries have the highest speeds at 25 Mbps and higher.

The data used to create the map comes from Speedtest.net. We did a quick test on the site and the results were 3.14 Mbps download speed and 1.30 Mbps upload speed, which pretty much confirms the information on the world map.
