“Everything with a display larger than 4.5 inches will be curved” – LG

2015 is the year of the curve, says LG. At an event this morning to mark the upcoming launch of their (surprisingly smaller) G Flex2 smartphone, the South Korean electronics giant announced that every device of theirs with a display larger than 4.5 inches will be curved.

“LG wants to start a curve revolution,” says Thomas van der Linde, LG’s marketing GM. “We will own the curve.”

The proverbial smartphone “thigh gap”, as seen with two G Flex2 smartphones.

More comfortable in hand, the new LG G Flex2 is curved in four different ways, ranging from a radius of 400mm to 700mm across the front, back, sides and top-to-bottom edges. It has a slimmed down 5.5 inch Full HD 1080p screen, 20% more durable Gorilla Glass and the same, “Self Healing” back cover as the original G Flex.

It's all about the curve.
It’s all ’bout that curve, about that curve.

“We’re really excited about the G Flex2, as a follow-up from our G Flex from 2014,” said Deon Prinsloo, LG’s mobile GM, to htxt.africa. “The main reason is that [the G Flex2] is South Africa’s first device with the Snapdragon Qualcom 810 chipset as well as a 64-bit Octa-Core processor. And, what is critical for me, is the more aggressive curvature. LG South Africa is the only manufacturer that has managed to bring curved devices to SA consumers.”

LG’s G Flex2 will be a Vodacom exclusive and available from April 7th for R10 499. On contract, you can expect the price to be as low as R499 per month.

“The big partnership with Vodacom means we can be really aggressive with the tariff plan,” added Prinsloo.

LG also unveiled the R1 999 curved (albeit only the back) LG CK50 smartphone, the beginning of LG’s mass-market curve domination. With a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 4.5-inch FWVGA display, the CK50 will be available in South Africa in May.
