LG’s Urbane smartwatch goes head-to-head with Apple Watch

The annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) is just around the corner, and its traditional for the biggest names in tech to announce and show off their latest products. LG isn’t one to take things lightly this year, as it will do battle against Apple’s Watch by unveiling its own all-metal smartwatch.

Called the LG Watch Urbane, the watch looks like a proper watch – and by that we mean that it doesn’t at first glance look anything like a smartwatch. Taking some design elements from LG’s first LG Watch R, this one also makes use of a full circular Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display.

Described by LG as “more formal with a thinner profile making it perfect for either men or women”, it is powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset, 4GB eMMC/ 512MB LPDDR2 memory, and a 410mAh battery. Naturally, it runs on Google’s Android Wear operating system.

The LG Watch Urbane’s classic design and smart features make it the perfect smartwatch to complement our G Watch and G Watch R, which were designed as more casual and active devices,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, in a press statement.

“LG Watch Urbane is an important part of our strategy to develop wearable devices that are worn and viewed as everyday accessories, not electronic gadgets.”

Even though it looks a bit fancy, fitness-minded wearers can still make use of the built-in heart rate and pulse monitor.

If you are in the market for a new smartwatch, keep an eye out for LG’s official announcement in the first week of March.
