Microsoft lures Dropbox users to OneDrive with 100GB of free storage for a year

Do you use Dropbox and OneDrive? Could you use 100GB of extra online storage? Well then Microsoft has an offer it may be hard to refuse – it wants to give you that 100GB, and in exchange all you need to do is sign into your Microsoft account and verify your Dropbox details. Easy.

The catch is you’ll only get that extra space for a year; after that you’ll need to subscribe. But Microsoft is clearly hoping that in those 365 days, you’ll find your OneDrive to be so useful that you’ll gladly fork out some cash to keep using it.

Right now, 100GB of OneDrive storage costs $1.99 a month (around R22) so it’s not exactly a lot of cash, and in a year’s time that may be even less as Microsoft ramps up its efforts to beat, well, everyone at every game.

If you qualify (or you’ve spotted this article and quickly signed up for Dropbox so you can take advantage), head over to this webpage, verify your Dropbox account and the extra space is yours.

Verify Dropbox with confirmation

I had a good chuckle during the sign-up process because of the cheeky way Microsoft is doing things: by saving a “Getting Started” doocument to my Drobox. I had to smile.

As happy as I am to have access to another 100GB of OneDrive storage, my own usage patterns aren’t very data-intensive so I’m not sure I’m going to get a lot of use out of it. I’ve hardly used any of the 27GB at my current disposal, and I don’t like uploading photos taken from my cell phone to the cloud as they use a lot of data that I don’t like paying for.

Still, I’m sure there are those among you that will jump at the opportunity, so grab it now while the offer is still on the table.
