Titanfall sequel to come to PlayStation?

The giant robot multiplayer game Titanfall will probably get a sequel in the future, and when it does it won’t be restricted to just one platform.

That’s the word from Electronic Arts’ chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen, who said as much at the Technology, Internet & Media conference currently underway in San Francisco.

He is quoted on Gamespot as saying “Last year it was on the Xbox only; in the future, we haven’t yet announced, but we’ll probably have another Titanfall game. It will probably be a bigger footprint than just a single platform. I think that’s a huge positive for us.”

It’s a huge positive for PlayStation gamers as well, as it’s the only major platform that was left out of Titanfall’s 2014 arrival. You may not recall much about it as South Africans were denied it at the last possible second, however, despite very positive impressions by those who played the open beta.

Of course this doesn’t mean the game is definitely coming, even though logic dictates it’s almost a certainty thanks to 2.55m sales on the Xbox One. While that isn’t a massive figure, it’s big enough to justify a sequel.

The original Titanfall is in a bit of trouble, though. Player numbers dropped considerably in the latter half of 2014, to the point where if you were to search for “Titanfall is dead“, you’ll find more than a handful of blogs and news articles proclaiming its fall from grace.

Perhaps that’s something a sequel can – and must – address if the game is to become a successful mega-franchise. Me, I’ll settle for Number Two having a single-player campaign in addition to a fresh new multiplayer mechanic.

We expect more news to come out of the Game Developer’s Conference happening in March, and E3 in June, and will report when we know more.
