Uber launches free donation pick up service for Cape Town firefighters

While over 300 brave fire fighters in Cape Town continue to work around the clock to control fires that broke out in various area around the city including Muzienberg, Noordhoek and Hout Bay, cab-hailing app Uber has stepped in to lend a helping hand.

Through a temporary service called UberASSIST, the company is offering to dispatch cabs for free to Capetonians who would like to donate items such as food and drinks to the fire fighters.

“Items that have been requested by the firefighters are bottles of water, sports energy drinks (Energade and Lucozade), non-perishable foods such as canned beans, spaghetti and sweetcorn and loaves of bread,” the company says.

“Uber will collect all donations and arrange to have them dropped off at the nominated fire stations and community centres across Cape Town.”

New and existing clients can donate by simply opening the UberASSIST vehicle view on the bottom slider, toggling over UberASSIST and requesting a ride like you normally would. A cab will arrive at your location within minutes, collect your donations and deliver them to the fire fighters.

Riders will not be able to take any rides in any of the UberASSIST vehicles, Uber states.
