Brace yourself for more over the top Wolfenstein goodness

If you enjoyed the brilliant Wolfenstein reboot as much as I did last year, you’re going to be very happy to hear that Bethesda is sending more Wolfenstein magic your way in the coming months.

It’s called Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, it won’t require that you own the original game, and it looks to be just as awesomely camp and over the top as the original, full of retro-tech Nazis, the dual-wielding of shotguns and machine guns and of course, stupid amounts of blood and gore (hence the PEGI 18 rating).

Story-wise The Old Blood is a prequel to the events of Wolfenstein. You still play series protagonist BJ Blazkowicz, but this time it’s 1946 and the Allies aren’t doing too well against the alternate-history Nazi war machine, and they’ve sent BJ to retrieve the co-ordinates to Deathshead’s compound in a desperate bid to swing World War II’s outcome in their favour.

To do that, BJ must infiltrate Castle Wolfenstein and, naturally, shoot new enemies with new weapons and cause all kinds of Nazi death in awful (but rather satisfying) ways.

Along the way he’ll encounter a crazy prison warden and “an obsessed Nazi archaeologist [who] is exhuming mysterious artefacts that threaten to unleash a dark and ancient power.” That’s according to the press release we received this morning, anyway.

Check out the trailer Bethesda has put out showing off all of the new game’s goodness in a cheesy 1940s-movie style, and try to suppress a grin.

Good luck with that.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is out on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on the 5th of May, 2015.

Curiously, the official press release states that the PS4 and PC versions of the game will be available in the shops as well as digitally, but Xbox One owners will only be able to get it digitally.
