Internet Explorer’s replacement arrives for Win10 Previewers

The long-promised replacement for Internet Explorer, still currently codenamed Project Spartan, is finally here. Sort of. It’s just arrived on all PCs running the Windows 10 preview, with most but not all of its promised features.

That means only those techies who’re trying Microsoft’s upcoming operating system (at their own risk) are playing with it right now, but it’s at least out and in the wild. Hopefully there’s time before Windows 10’s “Summer 2015” release window to incorporate the inevitable feedback the browser will attract.

Paul Thurrott, him of Windows Supersite fame, has a nicely detailed article on what Spartan does and doesn’t have. He also points out that the build of Windows 10 that contains the new browser has come out less than two weeks after the previous one did, in keeping with Microsoft’s promise to speed up the cadence of Win10 preview releases. They kind of have to, with “Summer 2015″ right around the corner and all.

Interestingly, Microsoft isn’t ditching Internet Explorer entirely, as the browser will ship with Windows 10; it just won’t pinned to the taskbar – that honour goes to Spartan. IE will remain accessible from the Start menu ” to support legacy requirements, especially in the enterprise”, though, according to Thurrott.

To see the breakdown of what Spartan brings to the table and what promised features are still missing from this release, check out Thurrott’s detailed blog post here.
