Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor wins Game of the Year at GDC

Monolith’s superb Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor has taken top honours at the Game Developer’s Conference, scooping the award for Game of the Year at the event.

Since GDC is attended by most, if not all the big names in the games development industry, it’s a pretty big deal. It’s like being voted as the baddest badass at a badass convention.

Shadow of Mordor was up against some serious competition, too: also in the running were Bungie’s huge shoot-n-looter Destiny, Creative Assembly’s brilliant Alien: Isolation, Blizzard’s Hearthstone card game that’s taken the gaming world by storm and Bayonetta 2, a game given a perfect 10 score by a number of high-profile publications including EDGE, Gamespot, Joystiq, Destructoid and Eurogamer.

Winning, then, is a huge honour for the game. If you haven’t played it yet, do yourself a favour and pick it up on the platform of your choice, it’s well worth the money.

Titanfall, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Far Cry 4, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Valiant Hearts: The Great War all got honourable mentions.

Ustwo’s Monument Valley picked up a bunch of awards at the conference, scooping Best Innovation, Best Handheld/Mobile Game and Best Visual Art; Alien: Isolation won for best sound.
