The passing of fantasy author and comic genius Sir Terry Pratchett touched quite a few people last week, and the world saw an outpouring of tributes to the man over social media in the subsequent days.
Elite Dangerous developer Frontier has done far more than offer kind words to commemorate Pratchett’s life and contributions to fantasy writing: a new spaceport has been added to the game bearing his name.
It’s called Pratchett’s Disc, which Eurogamer says was added in the latest patch.
“At Frontier we have a great many Pratchett fans on staff and we were all saddened to learn of his passing,” executive producer Michael Brookes told Eurogamer. The sentiment was reflected by our community so we felt it would be right to remember him in Elite: Dangerous.”
My own appetite for good books was fuelled in large part by Pratchett’s writing, which never failed to make me laugh with its insightful social commentary. I was always so impressed with how he managed to put across incredibly complex concepts while simultaneously poking fun at them using very few, mostly small words.
The only thing that could possibly top the addition of a spaceport bearing his name into a game about space exploration would be a giant space turtle carrying the actual Discworld on its back, but that would probably have been a lot more work.
Still, Frontier’s efforts are very touching. Good job, guys.
