This Chrome extension replaces drab tabs with works of art

If you spend your day using Chrome like I do, you’ve probably become a little tired of the dull pages that open when you click on the “New Tab” button.

As Chrome is a Google invention, and Google has access to the vast majority of the collected artworks of humankind, there’s a solution: install a Chrome extension that replaces the plain white of every new tab opened with famous (and not so famous) works of art.

The extension is called Google Art Project, and it’s completely free to download and use. Simply fire up the extension’s Chrome Web Store page and click Install. Now, every time you open a new tab you’ll see the entire background covered in glorious works of art before you click that bookmark or enter a URL.

In my brief time with it, I’ve seen Seaweed Gatherer by Paul Serusier, The Canal Morning Effect by Richard Buckner Gruelle and The Grand Canal, Venice, with the Palazzo Bembo by Francesco Guardi.

While I am no proper judge of art, I liked what I saw. It was certainly better than what I had before, which is to say nothing.

Since the extension draws from the art collection available through the Google Cultural Institute’s Art Project, you will likely seldom see a repeat. You’ll also get to bask in the beauty of human creation every time you open a new tab, and that can only be a good thing.
