Xbox One March system update out today, brings screenshots and more

Today is a good day for Xbox One owners: the much-vaunted ability to take screenshots finally arrives on Microsoft’s games console by way of the March update.

When you turn on your console tonight, the update download will commence, and when the reboot is complete you’ll be able to capture still images of those special gaming moments and upload them to OneDrive.

Yes, PlayStation 4 gamers have had that ability from the get-go and yes, it’s been a very long 16 months since launch to live without it (six for us “lucky” South African Xbox fans), but it’s finally here.

To capture a screenshot if you own a Kinect, all you have to do is say “Xbox, take a screenshot”, and if you don’t you must double-tap the Xbox button and then press Y to save an image of whatever is going on in the background. It’s not quite as elegant as the PlayStation 4, which has its own dedicated Share button built right into the controller, but it’s workable.

It is also worth pointing out that the screenshot is captured from the moment the Guide button is pressed, and not when the physical ‘Y’ button is pressed.

Tech Crunch reports the screenshot feature is one that Xbox fans request the most from Microsoft.

Saved screenshots can be turned into wallpapers for the Xbox One dashboard, shared via the Twitter app or uploaded directly to OneDrive. As a reviewer of Xbox One games, this is fantastic news as it makes the screenshot process a whole lot easier.

Alongside screenshot functionality, the March update brings tweaks to Party Chat, adjusting tile transparency on the dashboard and the option to share your real name with other Xbox Live players. The functionality was previously limited to only sharing your real name with those on your Friends list.

Microsoft has very kindly put out a video detailing it all, which you can see below:

In all I’d say this is a very welcome update. What do you guys think?
