Yesterday, the Menzi Mchunu Gallery at the BAT Centre in Durban unveiled its new Multimedia Centre with the opening of the Digital Arts Exhibition that’s not only set to give multimedia artists the platform to display their work, but also introduce multimedia art to students and those interested in the field.

Artworks, prints, objects, animations and photos by ten young artists from around KwaZulu-Natal are currently on display at the exhibition. It’s aim is to use these artists work to give insight into the artistic approaches and positions existing in the field of digital art in Durban and its surrounds, as well as to extend access and skills in digital technology and media to students, artists and visitors to the BAT Centre.

A number of artists have also been lined to present workshops and talks at the Multimedia Centre, Tegan Bristow and Joao Orecchia will share the result of their collaboration as part of an online artist residency program.

Mthobisi Maphumulo and Gloria Mbhele will present their perspectives on people watching the world through the screen of their phone and the relationship between tradition and technology.

Cebo Simphiwe Xulu is one of the artists whose work is on display. His artwork is an abstract personal commentary on the modern phenomenon of the selfie culture titled “Selfie 25”, which pays homage to the positive contributions of 25 future icons of South Africa’s digital age.

The Digital Art Exhibition is open until the 21st May 5 at the Menzi Mcunu Art Gallery on Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 4pm, while the Multimedia Centre is open Mondays to Fridays from 1pm to 5pm and offer weekly courses in various media such as computer basics, online marketing and graphic design.
