City of Joburg and Vodacom launch emergency USSD service to curb xenophobia attacks

The City of Joburg (CoJ) and mobile network provider Vodacom have just announced the setting up of an emergency operations service and centre that the public can use to report xenophobia related incidents via mobile phone.

The announcement was made by CoJ executive mayor Parks Tau at a media briefing on the city’s interventions against xenophobia this morning.

Victims or anyone in affected communities can dial *134*422#. You will then be taken through a step-by-step reporting process where you will be required to describe the xenophobic incident.

Spokesperson for the mayor, Phindile Chauke, says there is no charge for using the service and that customers on any network can take advantage of it. Assistance will then be discharged to the reported area of concern.

The service was launched to fast track distress calls from affected areas and the process of attending them. Chauke reiterated that there is no justification for xenophobia and attacks on foreign individuals.

The Report Xenophobia alerts website was also recently unveiled by iAfrikan and Ushaidi – you can use service to post real-time xenophobia reports if any incident occurs in your area.
