With the rand at R12 to the US dollar, we were more than a bit surprised to get wind of an upcoming PlayStation 4 deal that marks the console down by R700 for three days.

Ster Kinekor informed us via press release that this would indeed be happening. From the 1st to the 3rd of May, participating retail outlets will be selling the PlayStation 4 for R5 299, R700 less than its usual price of R5 999.

The deal also applies to PS4 bundles, but no specific pricing was released; Ster Kinekor just said that the R700 discount applies to “all PS4 bundles and standalone consoles”.

According to the statement, retailers include BT Games, Makro, DionWired, Game, AnimeWorX, Toys “R” Us, CNA, Incredible Connection, Game4u and

Should you decide to grab one, and you Tweet a photo of your receipt with the hashtag #PS4PlayinMay, you will put yourself in line to win a variety of “spot prizes”. In reply to my query, I was informed that these prizes will be made up of “PS4 peripherals, games & merch”.

As an avid gamer myself, and a proud owner of both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, I’d say this is an excellent time to get into console gaming considering the power on offer and the huge number of top-notch games available for both platforms.

I highly recommend Watch_Dogs, Sniper Elite 3, Assassin’s Creed: Unity and Dragon Age: Inquisition to get you started, and Bloodborne if you like a side order of punishment and cruelty while you game.

Deon got his first taste of PC gaming at the tender age of 11 when his father bought an 8088 XT, ostensibly to "help him with his homework". Instead, it introduced him to Leisure Suit Larry, King Graham, Sonny Bonds and many more, and Deon has been a PC gamer and hardware enthusiast ever since. He landed his first professional writing gig in 2006 at a prestigious local PC magazine, a very happy happenstance as he got to write for a living about things he loves - tech, PCs, gaming, and everything in between. He's been writing about it all ever since, and loves every minute of it.
