UCT ranked among top 10 best in Development Studies worldwide

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has been ranked seventh overall in the Development Studies category of the recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject report for 2015.

The QS World University Rankings explores 800 universities around the world and ranks them according to subjects, faculties and overall quality.

Wits University ranks 15th in Development Studies, while Stellenbosch University, the University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN), and University of Pretoria (UP) are all included in the top 100 under the same subject.

UCT also features in the top 50 in Geography, ranking 39th overall.

“UCT is particularly pleased to see South Africa hold its own in this specific ranking. This great performance by South African universities is a testimony to our consistently high international standing and reputation for academic excellence,” the university said.

UCT also has the most number of subjects ranked in the report (23), while Wits and UP follow behind at 11, Stellenbosch (10), UKZN (4), Rhodes (2) and UJ (1).

Collectively, UCT, Wits, UJ, UKZN, UP and Stellenbosch appear 15 times among the top 100 universities across all subjects ranked.

“These rankings provide a unique opportunity for South African institutions to be recognized for their specialized prowess in certain disciplines, something not seen in overall institutional rankings” said QS head of research Ben Sowter.
